There are thousands of websites available offering mobile ringtone downloads for you. Which site is right for you? You can pay for a single ringtone download or you can join a monthly subscription club.

There are different types of ringtones. Do you know the difference between a polyphonic ringtone, truetone, and realtone? Follow the hyperlinks provided to find out.

It is now very easy for you to download and load music directly onto your phone. Once the music file is on your phone you can turn it into your ringtone. When people call you on your phone, that song will play. If your phone supports it, this is as easy as downloading an MP3 file from the internet. However, you may need a special cable if you cellular phone does not support the connection. Check out our MP3 ringtone conversion guide for more details.

Where do you find ringtones if you do not have free MP3s to load? We have also made a guide for you under downloading ringtones.

If you are not familiar with what a ringtone is, here is a brief description:

A ringtone is a sound that plays to alert you to an incoming call. Traditional phones have standard rings, but because mobile phones are all electronic they have always been able to play special "tunes" to indicate incoming phone calls. Old phones just used bells, so there really was no option for variety.

Ringtones first appears in 1998 (that means they are coming up on their 10 year birthday!) The first ringtones were very basic. They consisted of essentially electronic beeps played in sequence. This is what is known as a polyphonic ringtone. More recently real audio files have been converted into ring tones. As newer and better phones come to market, such as the iPhone, the older beey polyphonic tones have practically vanished in favor of fancier and better sounding songs.

Do you want to download ringtones to your phone? Read how to right here.

A true tone, also known as a real tone, truetone, and mastertone, is a high quality sound file used as a ringtone. This means the exact song you heard on the radio or CD can be played on your mobile phone.

The majority of mobile phone ringtones are realtone -- as opposed to the now vintage sounding polyphonic ringtones.

A polyphonic ringtone can play up to 72 tones at once. Polyphonic files are very similar to the MIDI sequenced recording used on personal computers. As such, MIDIs can easily be converted into polyphonic ring tones.

A sequenced music file is a set of musical instructions, like a sheet of music. The actual instruments are based on the hardware and thus sound different from phone to phone.

In order to turn an audio file (wav, mp3, etc) into a ringtone you need a special audio converion software utility.

Here is a sampling of the many varieties of ringtone file formats available:

.imy, .imelody, 10.imy, 12.imy, .emy, .emelody, .txt, .rtttl, .rtx, .nokia, .bin, .ott, .rng, .noktxt - Nokia, .rmi, .rmid, .mid, .midi, .mmf, .smaf, .ma1.mmf, .ma2.mmf, .ma3.mmf, .sagem, .sag, .srt, .10.sagem, .21.sagem, .rmid, .rmi, .mot, .motbin, .pmd, .cmx, .wav, .wave, .au, .snd, .aiff, .mp3, .amr, .awb, .mld

Thats a lot of different file types! Can you keep up with all of them? You need to check your mobile phone manual to find out what type of format your phone supports.

Option #1 - Convert Ringtones, Commercial Paid Software

There are many commercial software utilities available that will help you convert your audio files in to ringtones. The best ones are relatively easy to use and you should expect to spend $20-$50 for them

Option #2 - Free Ringtone Conversion Demo Software

Did you see the catch? Demo software. What that means is that the software is limited, or "crippled" in its usage. That could mean something as annoying as a audio clip they insert before or after the ringtone, it could be a ringtone length limitation (15 seconds) or it could be a limited number of ringtone conversion uses. After 5 ringtones, you have to pay money for the full version.

There are free ringtone conversion software options available, but they may be more difficult to use. Thats because the software developer has to work a full time job themselves! That free gift to you was just a hobby.

Additionally, if you can get free conversion software you then need to connect a special cord to your computer to copy the file over.

There are many, many places where you can download ringtones online. First, I will review the three main categories that are available to you.

1. Audio Music Files

If your phone supports it, you can use an MP3 files as your ringtone. You can download MP3s from filesharing programs or purchase them on various internet web sites. Be aware that popular music services such as iTunes use a special format, and you can not use them as ringtones. This is for copy protection reasons (and the music industry wants you to pay twice for your music)

2. Phone Ready Music Files

Mobile phones have different formats. As such, you can download ringtone ready files from the web to load onto your phone. Most of these files are readily available from special online mobile communities. You need to find a community that represents your type of mobile phone and/or mobile provider carrier.

3. Ringtone Services

Ringtone services allow you to pay a small fee to download ringtones. These are the easiest to use and you don't have the hassle of connecting a cord from your computer to your phone. All you need to do is select the ringtone on your phone, and poof, it downloads and you have it. Hands down, this is the easiest method.
